The design departs from a dialogue between contemporary form and the classic eclecticism associated with Josef Frank and Estrid Ericson, the founding figures of Svenskt Tenn. The warm and generous qualities of a bed were a recurring reference throughout the design process, expressed in the depth of the seat and the low seat height. The name Famna, meaning embrace, reflects this inviting character. The seating curve was developed through studies of the form and elegance of vintage enamel bathtubs.

The sofa frame is constructed in the manner of a wooden boat hull, with floor and deck beams in solid wood, plywood and masonite. The turned and lacquered legs are in solid beech. Seat cushions are built on spiral springs, reducing the amount of polyether required while maintaining comfort. The five interchangeable back cushions contain a mix of down and locally produced synthetic filling, all made in Tranås. The rounded frame demands a high level of craft at every stage of production, from construction to pattern matching and upholstery.

The collection also includes a matching ottoman, extending the same formal language into a complementary piece.

Famna is manufactured by O.H. Sjögrens Möbelfabrik in Tranås, which has produced upholstered furniture for Svenskt Tenn since 1982. Each sofa is made entirely by hand. The shape and dimensions have been carefully considered to make the most of the material and minimise waste. Famna marks the first contemporary sofa launched by Svenskt Tenn since the 1980s.
