The Swedish Institute in Paris has been housed in Hôtel de Marle, a 16th century palace in the Marais district, since 1971. Open to the public, the institute is one of the most visited foreign cultural centres in the French capital, hosting well curated art exhibitions alongside a broad program of cultural events.

TAF worked for over a year to develop the new interior design, with a brief centered on sustainability, accessibility and a contemporary Swedish design profile. The challenge was to intervene carefully and confidently in a historic building of significant architectural character, respecting its origin while bringing it into the present.

The institute's collection of Swedish design classics by figures such as Bruno Mathsson and Carl Malmsten has been retained and now sits alongside new additions in the form of contemporary design and craft with Swedish connections. Each acquired object is accompanied by a short text describing its background, production process or origin, grounding the collection in a wider narrative about Swedish design.

TAF's design runs throughout the public spaces of the institute, including Café Suédois.
